We are in need of the following items: Small toys (marbles, small stuffed animals or dolls, yo-yos, jump ropes, small balls, little cars/trucks/planes), hairbrushes, regular-sized toothpaste, toothbrushes and plastic holders,  coloring books, hats, and sunglasses.  Monetary donations may also be given to purchase items for these boxes.  Additionally, we will need plastic totes, bins, and baskets to help us sort these items.  Please drop off all items in the foyer classroom and label your bins/totes with your name so they can be returned to you after VBS.  Please see Andrew Ashley or Amanda Moore for further information.

Bulletin 5/13/2018

To the Mothers of the Westside Congregation

(dmw)

Happy Mothers’ Day!  I KNOW that this congregation has some of the best Mothers in … THE WORLD!  I have one!  You all are the best Mothers in the world   because you love your children, showing them our Savior Jesus by imitating Him in your life and by teaching them His word, and praying to God for them every day!  God will bless you Christian Mothers!  And your children will … one fine day … “rise up and bless (you) …”, too! (Proverbs 31:28)

I want to share this expressive poem – edited somewhat because of space - of what Mothers mean in our Society: “MOTHER is a big smile with love in the middle; two eyes filled with hope & pride, and just a tint of fear.  She’s a member of the world’s greatest sorority; she’s America’s hardest working career gift – she’s a mother.

“She’s young and old and in between; she’s short and tall and rich and poor; she’s the hope of the world with love in her heart – she’s a mother.…

“She’s timid enough to faint at the sight of a mouse, but will battle the world when one of her brood needs help.  She’s a tired sight, standing over a sink full of dirty dishes; she’s the future in a pretty dress – she’s a mother.

“Mothers like fathers, children, quiet nights at home, fires in the fire-place, family outings, the happy shouts of boys and girls, A’s on report cards, and the music of family laughter.…

“Mothers furnish quarterbacks for football teams and forwards to play basketball, give sons to their country to fight wars,  husbands for other women, and wives for men.  Mothers worry about the budget, look pretty for other people, cry when their sons and daughters graduate from school – and at weddings.

“A Mother is the original ‘jack-of-all-trades’.  She’s a housekeeper, plumber,  gardener, carpenter, chef, babysitter, nurse, psychiatrist, and judge.  She’s a pediatrician, hostess, seamstress, janitor, and Sunday-school teacher.  She’s a diplomat holding a safety pin.  She’s a good-will ambassador making oatmeal in the morning .…

“Mothers have courage that brings gentleness to nations, roots to the family, and warmth to the world.  She’s God’s greatest invention – she’s a MOTHER”!

PSALM 1:1-3

(NASV)

HOW blessed is the man

Who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,

Nor stand in the path of sinners,

Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

BUT his delight is in the law of the Lord,

And in His law

He meditates day and night.

HE will be like a tree

Firmly planted by streams of water,

Which yields its fruit in its season

And its leaf does not wither;

And in whatever he does,

He prospers.

You + God’s Word > Satan

There are some battles we are helpless to win on our own.  We have no chance of defeating Satan using our own strength and power.  We are easy prey for our enemy when standing alone.  With God, we can be victorious.  God’s presence always changes the equation.  God provides us everything we need to overcome sin.  He gives us everything we need to defeat Satan.  God has given us the weapon we need to make Satan run from us.  In Matthew 4 and Luke 4, Jesus uses this weapon to defeat Satan.  In Ephesians 6, Paul describes this weapon as our only offensive assault against the Devil.  Both of these Scriptures powerfully illustrate that the only weapon you need to defeat Satan is God’s Word.  In     response to Satan’s temptations, Jesus responded to the Devil by quoting Scripture.  Jesus didn’t perform a miracle to overcome.  He didn’t call down angels from heaven to overcome.  He simply used the very weapon we have   access to in our lives…the Word of God.  Paul’s letter to Ephesus lays out many weapons of defense against Satan.  When Paul turns to the offensive side, the only weapon mentioned is “the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.”   Take a moment to contemplate the following expressions listed below.  These expressions summarize our spiritual battle against Satan.

 1.    You + God’s Word > Satan

 2.    You – God’s Word < Satan

Perhaps it’s time we add God back into the equation of our lives.  God will lways be the difference-maker.

A Scene of Hope

One of the great pictures of hope in the Bible is found in Revelation 7:9-17.  God’s Revelation to John was important for many reasons.  At this time in history, Christians were under duress.  They were facing intense persecution.  Their faith in God often led to imprisonment, torture and at times even death.  These people needed a message of hope.  They needed something to help them stay faithful to God through these challenging times.  Revelation provided them exactly what they needed.  What do we learn about God in this text?

We see that God is our Savior.  In Paul’s letter to Titus, both Jesus and God are described as our Savior.  In Titus 1:3; 2:10 & 3:4, Paul describes God as   Savior.  God has a plan for His creation.  His plan starts with our salvation.  Jesus commissioned the apostles to, “Go therefore and make disciples”.  The apostles were to share the message of the gospel with the world.  Before Jesus ascends back to heaven He tells these men that they “shall be His witnesses both in     Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and even to the remotest part of the earth.”  Revelation 7:9 is the result of this preaching.

We also see God is a comforter.  Notice the picture in Revelation 7:17.  God wants His people to be comforted.  This has always been true.  In the OT, God sends a message of comfort to the nation of Israel through the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 40:1.  As a result of Judah’s rebellion against God, they were taken away into Babylonian captivity.  Despite their rebellion, God loved His people. He wanted them to be comforted.  His message to His people in captivity centered on comfort.  “Comfort, O comfort My people,” says your God.  Isaiah offered a message of hope to the nation of Israel.  In similar fashion, John’s Revelation was a message of hope for Christians of his day:

They were struggling…but there were better days ahead!

They were being persecuted…but there were better days ahead!

They were abused and mistreated…but there were  better days ahead!

If you are in Christ…if you are a Christian…if you know Jesus as Savior, there are better days ahead!

Bulletin 4/01/2018

Dear friends and family,

I trust all is well with you.  We are fine and enjoying some beautiful fall weather here in Campinas.

We have started our theology classes again for this semester.  We decided to offer two different time slots this semester.  We have one class that meets on Monday night from 7:30pm till 9:30pm.  This class has around 130 students.  The other class meets on Thursday afternoon from 2pm till 5pm.  This class has around 35 students.  These students come from different denominational backgrounds. Most are there to study the  Bible.  Some are there only to create trouble.  It really does not matter.  As long as the Word of God is proclaimed we can handle the trouble makers!  We also have another theology class that meets on Tuesday night at the Campo Grande congregation.  They are having around 40 students.  They are doing the teaching themselves.  The Christians there are maturing and doing an excellent work.  Please keep these two groups that meet at the Guanabara congregation and the one that meets at Campo Grande congregation in your prayers.

At the end of March we have three major nation-wide meetings.  This is a busy time of the year.  On Friday (30th) and Saturday (31st) we have ENOC and ENOCA.  ENOC is a men’s weekend retreat that meets in Sao Paulo at the church camp.  This meeting has been going on for over 40 years.  Around 400 men from all over Brazil meet and attend classes and enjoy wonderful fellowship.  The theme this year is “How will the church in the future be like?”  ENOCA is a women’s weekend retreat that in a camp in Campinas.   Robin is responsible for this program that has been meeting for 36 years.  Around 200 women are present for this event.  The theme for this year is “Anxiety.”  Right after these two big events we begin our Intensive Studies Week. This week begins on April 1st and goes through April 6th.  It is designed for preachers and their wives and elders and deacons and their wives.  We usually have around 120 in attendance. This event has also being going strong for 36 years.  It meets in Campinas and it is a wonderful time of teaching and maintaining sound doctrine throughout the country of Brazil.  Our topic this year is “Christian Maturity.”  Our teachers will be Howard Norton, Randy Short, Mel Latorre and Alan Nalley.

The Guanabara church is growing.  We have averaged in these first three Sundays in March 250 in attendance.  Many visitors from the theology classes are attending worship service.  Please pray for the church and for the evangelists and their families.

We love you and pray for you.

Allen and Robin Dutton

A Call for Empathy

When I read Corinthians, I am struck by how many times Paul connects weakness to   holiness. It’s as if the whole letter, peppered with missives to keep the weak in mind—to even change our behavior in favor of the weak—values those who struggle. It shouldn’t be surprising, given that Jesus’s ministry was to the sick, wounded, and burdened, and that Paul, a former Pharisee and Persecutor, was literally weakened by God in order to fully know Christ. The weak is where God resides. The weak is where God shows up. So to God, shaming and shunning the weak isn’t to be taken lightly.

I wonder if this is how we typically read this passage in 1 Corinthians 8:1-13? Do we see the “weaker brother” as an opportunity to be compassionate and empathetic, or do we see him as a chance to be self-righteous and arrogant? Paul says that wounding another’s conscience while it’s weak is tantamount to sinning against Christ. These are harsh words, and the fact that we typically brush by them aside in a rush to proof-text and condemn, should give us anxiety. We see the “weak” as “sinners” who just can’t control their urges or ignorant children who don’t understand God like we do. But we totally miss the fact that these individuals aren’t any less faithful or spiritual—they are just…burdened. Wounded.

In the youth group, I remember ministers using these words to describe people who drink or swear. That was the extent of the exegesis of these verses, and even as a teenager, I felt it was missing the spirit of what Paul’s saying. And I believe that’s because it’s easy to use this passage to address sin, but it is harder to see it as addressing  woundedness.

Because that requires more work than just “not drinking”—it requires a deep sense of empathy and the ability to take another’s perspective. It requires putting aside one’s arrogance, and adopting the difficult stance of embracing another’s pain, woundedness, and weakness—walking alongside it and recognizing that any actions that would further wound that person are condemned by Christ.

So, we can’t walk away from people, puffed up in a false knowledge. That is not empathetic, compassionate, or accurate. It does nothing except exert arrogant power over the wounded individual. And, according to Paul, it is sinful.

Paul is calling for empathy. And this empathy must flow in the direction of the weak and wounded. Not the abuser. Not the privileged or advantaged or rich or powerful. It must surround like a gushing river the souls and consciences of those hurting. In these instances, we must think to ourselves: “Does my treatment of this issue lead someone closer to or further away from Christ?” “Does it further wound them, or does it grant them healing?” And our priority is always to the least of these.

 “God’s Not on My Side”

Some of our first encounters with reality happen on the school playground. Some of the lessons are humiliating. Embarrassing. Cruel. Few are harsher than “choosing sides”... especially if you’re the last one picked.

You remember. The two best are the “captains.” They get to do the choosing. A few of the group are confident; they know they’ll be among the first chosen. Everyone else is hopeful that they’ll be chosen earlier rather than later. At some point, the hopefuls start begging- “Me! Me! Me!” At that point, there’s a sigh of relief from everyone who’s chosen.

But there are a few whose only hope is to not be the last one chosen. The only thing in life worse is when there’s an odd number and someone is not chosen... left standing alone. Humiliated. Embarrassed. Cruel.

Someone recently - angrily - said to me, “God’s not on my side!”

It occurs to me that our age may be making the mistake of thinking that we are the captain and we invite God to join our team. That’s a mistake. When Moses asked God who he was, God replied, “I AM THAT I AM.” He didn’t say, “I am who you want me to be.”

God is the captain. God does the choosing, not you. (John 15:16 - “You did not choose me, but I chose you...”). Some accept; some decline.

It’s really important that you understand that it’s HIS team, not yours. HE invites, not you. HE calls the plays, not you. HE doesn’t change the game plan to follow you.

The beauty of this truth is - you don’t have to stand in the crowd hoping God will choose you. He already has. He is inviting you to follow Him.

WESTSIDE ACTIVE YOUTH

We enjoyed a cold, but spiritually uplifting Winter Quest Retreat last weekend!  Thanks to our teens for their courage to brave the temperatures and grow with God!

Today, there is a devotional at the Varner’s.  The middle school is asked to bring soft drinks and the high school to bring chips.  Come enjoy this time of food, fun and fellowship!

Keep in mind: Noble Lunch has been moved to Tuesday this week.  Look for me in the café!.  See me if you have questions regarding this activity.

PARENTS:  We are in serious need for   volunteers to sign up to host one of our Winter or Spring devotionals.  The sign-up is located on the youth board and there are  several dates to choose!  Thanks for making a difference for our teens, we appreciate you!

Keep in mind that the second LTC Pre-Convention deadline is quickly approaching.  Please have all your projects completed and ready to be sent off by Sunday, February 18!  Let’s finish strong!

WBS and WEI Opportunities in 2018

Here in the month of January, the pages of our calendars are fresh and new.  No doubt, many of us have made resolutions concerning our Christian walk of faith.  Perhaps you have been thinking that you need to be more vocal and proactive in fulfilling the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:19-20.

Our congregation is blessed to have two ministries that allow Christians to fulfill the Great Commission from our homes and make available the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world.

World Bible School (WBS) uses the postal system to teach the Good News.  Our congregation primarily focuses on Nigeria because of our extensive history and experience in this country through the work of Doug Wheeler and others. Cliff Barger oversees this ministry and would be delighted to help anyone get started as a WBS Teacher in this good work.

World English Institute (WEI) uses the internet to teach the Good News to students who want to learn English as a second language using the Bible as the textbook. Students are available from all nations, as well as here in the US.  While students are studying English, they learn the Scriptures.  Blane Anderson coordinates this ministry and holds frequent WEI teacher-training sessions as   announced in the bulletin.

WBS and WEI are not competitors! Rather, they are collaborators! Both ministries have the same objective to make disciples. Both are effective in reaching their targeted audience. Both organizations help each other by providing contacts and advice concerning an area where one or the other has  expertise.  WEI can go where WBS cannot go (internet/postal censorship) and WBS is effective in areas where WEI is not (areas where English is widely spoken).

These are but two ministries to help each one of us to fulfill the Great Commission.  What better way to start 2018 than to sign up to be a part of one of these ministries?

WESTSIDE ACTIVE YOUTH

We enjoyed an awesome AWTG last Sunday evening here at Westside!  The singing was excellent and so was the message.  We also had an amazing crew work for us to set up the food lines, take care of the beverages and clean-up after the event.  Thanks to all of our volunteers who helped make this event a tremendous success!

Today there is no scheduled activity as several of our group will be returning from the Winter Quest Retreat at Pettiiohn Springs.  Please keep us in your prayers as we travel.

Parents be sure to sign up to host one of our Winter or Spring devotionals.  The sign-up is located on the youth board and there are several dates to choose!  Thanks for making a difference for our teens, we appreciate you!
