Can We Just Be Honest a Second?

Most Christians – I’d be willing to guess, sooner or later, all Christians – have  unexpected questions and doubt that threaten familiar ways of believing and thinking about God.

Maybe we’ve read a book, listened to a podcast, or listened to a professor that introduced instability to our once stable faith. Maybe we’ve met new people who don’t share our ideas about the Bible or God at all, and they ask us challenging questions. Maybe we’ve  experienced a devastating loss or suffered a horrible tragedy that leaves us questioning everything we thought we believed.

So, what do you do? You hold it in and wade through your life, keeping it all quiet, trying not to think about your doubts and your questions, and hoping nobody brings it up. Because you don’t want to be labeled as a person who “used to have a strong faith” or “doesn’t know what they believe anymore.”

Church is too often the riskiest place to be spiritually honest. What a shame.  Because the truth is, doubt and questions play an important role in us growing spiritually. The traditional view of faith is that doubt is bad and evidences the absence of faith. Granted, some forms of doubt are bad and exist only as destructive influences–they exist to destroy. Other forms of doubt are constructive and help to build our faith.  Whether these doubts destroy or build depends on the response of the person to the doubt. If the person seeks to increase understanding because of the doubt, it is constructive. If the person seeks honest, open answers to questions raised by the doubt, it is constructive. If the person uses the doubt to increase dependence on and closeness to God, it is constructive.

The Bible documents that the constructive use of this kind of doubt is a part of the process of developing the mature faith or dependence God wants all of us to have. Thomas doubted the resurrection of Jesus and it wasn’t until he got some questions answered that his faith grew to a point where he could proclaim, “My Lord and My God.”  Gideon doubted that God could use him to help Israel, so he put God to the test twice before he would believe.  Sarah and Abraham literally laughed at God’s promise that they would have a son, but in the New Testament when Paul and James want to give us a model of faith, they point to Abraham.

Can we just be honest a second? We all struggle with doubts and questions from time to time.  Instead of hiding from it, let’s help each other grow!

Grace and Peace . . . Drew

Gone But Not Forgotten!

Samuel Duncan.  Do you recognize that name?  I don’t suppose there would be any reason you would unless you were related in some way.  To tell you the truth I don’t know much about Samuel myself.  I do know he was a father, born on  October 9, 1870, and he died February 3, 1942.  He is buried at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, next to his wife, Mary Jane, who died September 11, 1963.  She was apparently quite a woman. Her headstone reads, “A sweet and faithful Christian, ambitious, determined, and a good sense of humor.”

Actually I never would have discovered Samuel’s headstone had it not been for his wife’s.  An overgrown shrub had spread over his marker and hid nearly the entire stone.  From a distance you wouldn’t know that there were two headstones, because you could only see one. As I pulled back shrub limbs, I read a phrase on the stone that struck me as being really ironic.  It said, “Gone, but not forgotten.” Yet, someone had forgotten.  Someone forgot to cut back the shrub and care for this plot.  Could it be possible that over time, this man was unintentionally forgotten?  I believe it is conceivable.

Now let me ask a question.  Is it possible that a Christian could be guilty of the same act of forgetfulness toward God?  I think the Israelites were guilty of forgetting about God in the Old Testament when they began to worship idols and live wickedly.  Over time they forgot God’s laws and commandments.  The Book of the Law was found during King Josiah’s reign (2 Kings 22) and Judah realized that their forefather’s had forgotten and disobeyed God.  How could they do such a thing? “Well, I certainly couldn’t forget about God and His great sacrifice by  allowing Jesus to die on the cross for our sins; I will always remember!”  Then let me ask some more questions.  When is the last time you prayed?  When is the last time you were a Daily Bible Reader?  When was the last time you gave to God generously of your money, your time and your talents?  When was the last time you worshipped and had fellowship with the body of Christ? God is not gone.  He is alive and among us today.  If you have forgotten, please remember He loves you and wants you to come to Him.  “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord. . ." (Deuteronomy 6:12).

Good Fruit

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23)

My brother has worked over 35 years in a produce department.  He knows fresh fruit when he sees it and he easily recognizes fraudulent freshness, too.  Daily, he’ll pick through each piece determining if it’s genuine or not and if worthy to be displayed and marketed.  Likewise, a healthy, vibrant, and delicious fruit bowl requires constant observation of its content by us.  The physical fruit we eat will not stay fresh, we understand that, but our spiritual fruit can stay pertinent and effective as long as we maintain a tested and proven formula to keep ourselves close to God’s word, His  family, and stay in communication with our Lord.

The spiritual fruit Paul mentions to the Galatian church is what we should observe in ourselves and other brethren.  Since we’ve been freed from our sinful (fraudulent) life, there’s no need to desire to be phony again. Paul also encourages the church to not be lured back by those trying to disturb us.  Sometimes those trouble-makers (Galatians 1:7) may be people from the past who are enticing us to come back to our old ways, or they’re new acquaintances with a supposed “new” way to live.  Neither one will keep your spiritual fruit fresh.  Each of us have a great responsibility to be relevant and fresh for God, the church, and for those looking for “real produce” to replace their spoiled life.

To the Mothers of the Westside Congregation

(dmw)

Happy Mothers’ Day!  I KNOW that this congregation has some of the best Mothers in … THE WORLD!  I have one!  You all are the best Mothers in the world   because you love your children, showing them our Savior Jesus by imitating Him in your life and by teaching them His word, and praying to God for them every day!  God will bless you Christian Mothers!  And your children will … one fine day … “rise up and bless (you) …”, too! (Proverbs 31:28)

I want to share this expressive poem – edited somewhat because of space - of what Mothers mean in our Society: “MOTHER is a big smile with love in the middle; two eyes filled with hope & pride, and just a tint of fear.  She’s a member of the world’s greatest sorority; she’s America’s hardest working career gift – she’s a mother.

“She’s young and old and in between; she’s short and tall and rich and poor; she’s the hope of the world with love in her heart – she’s a mother.…

“She’s timid enough to faint at the sight of a mouse, but will battle the world when one of her brood needs help.  She’s a tired sight, standing over a sink full of dirty dishes; she’s the future in a pretty dress – she’s a mother.

“Mothers like fathers, children, quiet nights at home, fires in the fire-place, family outings, the happy shouts of boys and girls, A’s on report cards, and the music of family laughter.…

“Mothers furnish quarterbacks for football teams and forwards to play basketball, give sons to their country to fight wars,  husbands for other women, and wives for men.  Mothers worry about the budget, look pretty for other people, cry when their sons and daughters graduate from school – and at weddings.

“A Mother is the original ‘jack-of-all-trades’.  She’s a housekeeper, plumber,  gardener, carpenter, chef, babysitter, nurse, psychiatrist, and judge.  She’s a pediatrician, hostess, seamstress, janitor, and Sunday-school teacher.  She’s a diplomat holding a safety pin.  She’s a good-will ambassador making oatmeal in the morning .…

“Mothers have courage that brings gentleness to nations, roots to the family, and warmth to the world.  She’s God’s greatest invention – she’s a MOTHER”!

PSALM 1:1-3

(NASV)

HOW blessed is the man

Who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,

Nor stand in the path of sinners,

Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

BUT his delight is in the law of the Lord,

And in His law

He meditates day and night.

HE will be like a tree

Firmly planted by streams of water,

Which yields its fruit in its season

And its leaf does not wither;

And in whatever he does,

He prospers.

Bulletin 4/22/2018

You + God’s Word > Satan

There are some battles we are helpless to win on our own.  We have no chance of defeating Satan using our own strength and power.  We are easy prey for our enemy when standing alone.  With God, we can be victorious.  God’s presence always changes the equation.  God provides us everything we need to overcome sin.  He gives us everything we need to defeat Satan.  God has given us the weapon we need to make Satan run from us.  In Matthew 4 and Luke 4, Jesus uses this weapon to defeat Satan.  In Ephesians 6, Paul describes this weapon as our only offensive assault against the Devil.  Both of these Scriptures powerfully illustrate that the only weapon you need to defeat Satan is God’s Word.  In     response to Satan’s temptations, Jesus responded to the Devil by quoting Scripture.  Jesus didn’t perform a miracle to overcome.  He didn’t call down angels from heaven to overcome.  He simply used the very weapon we have   access to in our lives…the Word of God.  Paul’s letter to Ephesus lays out many weapons of defense against Satan.  When Paul turns to the offensive side, the only weapon mentioned is “the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.”   Take a moment to contemplate the following expressions listed below.  These expressions summarize our spiritual battle against Satan.

 1.    You + God’s Word > Satan

 2.    You – God’s Word < Satan

Perhaps it’s time we add God back into the equation of our lives.  God will lways be the difference-maker.

WESTSIDE ACTIVE YOUTH

in the AWTG last week at Tecumseh.  Our volleyball team had a rough start, but I witnessed them come together and play as a true team.  It was exciting to see every teen overcome the elements and work together, from those cheering on the sideline to those putting the ball over the net.  Keep up the good work!

Tonight we will have a youth devotional at the Porter House.  Plan to go and enjoy this time of food, fun, and fellowship.

Tomorrow is Noble Lunch.  Look for me at the usual spot in the commons. Always enjoy lunchtime!

Next Sunday (April 29) is our youth devotional at the Jennings’.  Be sure to mark this on your calendar and plan to attend.

Now is the time to sign up for the Summer Summit at Six Flags and the Texas Rangers baseball game. Sign-ups are located on the youth board and the youth room. The Deadline to sign up is coming up quickly on Sunday, May 6th.

Keep in mind the High School Appreciation Banquet will be  Saturday May 5th at 6:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room.  We will need  teen   volunteers to help serve at this event.

A Scene of Hope

One of the great pictures of hope in the Bible is found in Revelation 7:9-17.  God’s Revelation to John was important for many reasons.  At this time in history, Christians were under duress.  They were facing intense persecution.  Their faith in God often led to imprisonment, torture and at times even death.  These people needed a message of hope.  They needed something to help them stay faithful to God through these challenging times.  Revelation provided them exactly what they needed.  What do we learn about God in this text?

We see that God is our Savior.  In Paul’s letter to Titus, both Jesus and God are described as our Savior.  In Titus 1:3; 2:10 & 3:4, Paul describes God as   Savior.  God has a plan for His creation.  His plan starts with our salvation.  Jesus commissioned the apostles to, “Go therefore and make disciples”.  The apostles were to share the message of the gospel with the world.  Before Jesus ascends back to heaven He tells these men that they “shall be His witnesses both in     Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and even to the remotest part of the earth.”  Revelation 7:9 is the result of this preaching.

We also see God is a comforter.  Notice the picture in Revelation 7:17.  God wants His people to be comforted.  This has always been true.  In the OT, God sends a message of comfort to the nation of Israel through the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 40:1.  As a result of Judah’s rebellion against God, they were taken away into Babylonian captivity.  Despite their rebellion, God loved His people. He wanted them to be comforted.  His message to His people in captivity centered on comfort.  “Comfort, O comfort My people,” says your God.  Isaiah offered a message of hope to the nation of Israel.  In similar fashion, John’s Revelation was a message of hope for Christians of his day:

They were struggling…but there were better days ahead!

They were being persecuted…but there were better days ahead!

They were abused and mistreated…but there were  better days ahead!

If you are in Christ…if you are a Christian…if you know Jesus as Savior, there are better days ahead!

Bulletin 4/01/2018

Dear friends and family,

I trust all is well with you.  We are fine and enjoying some beautiful fall weather here in Campinas.

We have started our theology classes again for this semester.  We decided to offer two different time slots this semester.  We have one class that meets on Monday night from 7:30pm till 9:30pm.  This class has around 130 students.  The other class meets on Thursday afternoon from 2pm till 5pm.  This class has around 35 students.  These students come from different denominational backgrounds. Most are there to study the  Bible.  Some are there only to create trouble.  It really does not matter.  As long as the Word of God is proclaimed we can handle the trouble makers!  We also have another theology class that meets on Tuesday night at the Campo Grande congregation.  They are having around 40 students.  They are doing the teaching themselves.  The Christians there are maturing and doing an excellent work.  Please keep these two groups that meet at the Guanabara congregation and the one that meets at Campo Grande congregation in your prayers.

At the end of March we have three major nation-wide meetings.  This is a busy time of the year.  On Friday (30th) and Saturday (31st) we have ENOC and ENOCA.  ENOC is a men’s weekend retreat that meets in Sao Paulo at the church camp.  This meeting has been going on for over 40 years.  Around 400 men from all over Brazil meet and attend classes and enjoy wonderful fellowship.  The theme this year is “How will the church in the future be like?”  ENOCA is a women’s weekend retreat that in a camp in Campinas.   Robin is responsible for this program that has been meeting for 36 years.  Around 200 women are present for this event.  The theme for this year is “Anxiety.”  Right after these two big events we begin our Intensive Studies Week. This week begins on April 1st and goes through April 6th.  It is designed for preachers and their wives and elders and deacons and their wives.  We usually have around 120 in attendance. This event has also being going strong for 36 years.  It meets in Campinas and it is a wonderful time of teaching and maintaining sound doctrine throughout the country of Brazil.  Our topic this year is “Christian Maturity.”  Our teachers will be Howard Norton, Randy Short, Mel Latorre and Alan Nalley.

The Guanabara church is growing.  We have averaged in these first three Sundays in March 250 in attendance.  Many visitors from the theology classes are attending worship service.  Please pray for the church and for the evangelists and their families.

We love you and pray for you.

Allen and Robin Dutton
