Bulletin 12/10/2017

Please Attend Bible Class!

(Jimmy Ferguson/dmw)

Five reasons for attending Bible Class are …

BIBLE CLASS affords you the opportunity to study the Bible in a systematic way!  Various sections of the Bible and topical studies are taught!

BIBLE CLASS helps keep our thinking “straight”!  To be in a class with the Teacher who is prepared, and with others who have Bible knowledge, help us maintain “healthy and wholesome” doctrine and correct thinking!

BIBLE CLASS assures us that at least twice a week – Sunday and Wednesday – we have the opportunity to engage in the study of God’s word where there is interaction among other Christians!  Our Bible knowledge is increased, and that is a good thing!

BIBLE CLASS allows for the raising of questions to which we need answers, and for the input from others into the discussion!

BIBLE CLASS provides extra fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ on the word of God as the point of discussion!

See you in Bible Class, brethren!

STRESS - and the Christian!

(dmw)

The swift pace of life in the 21st Century here in America staggers me, doesn’t it you?! Because of the speed we can communicate and travel these days, I am sure that we out-pace our Lord Jesus and His disciples on even their busiest days, and yet Jesus told His disciples on one occasion, “… rest a while” (Mark 6:31)!  The pace at which we do things today can cause great stress in our life!

How do you cope with the STRESS you have in your life?  Let me give you TWELVE HELPS for coping with your stress:

Pray to God!

Pray to God “on the spot” when you have great stress!  “Nip stress in the bud”!

Don’t wait until bed-time to pray to God when you are stressed!

Take one day at a time – read Matthew 6:34, and believe it!

Carry a Bible with you to read during the day, and read it when you have time!

Get your rest!

Eat right!

Get up on time so that you can start the day unrushed!

Make friends with godly people!

Laugh at events when you can, and then laugh some more!

Count your many blessings!

Remind yourself that … you are NOT the general manager of the Universe! GOD is!!

 A Life of PRAYER

(dmw)

Our Heavenly Father wants to hear from us!  He doesn’t give us specific times to pray to Him – rather, He wants to hear from us ANYTIME!  When teaching His disciples to pray in Luke 11:1-13, the Son of God uses verbs that literally mean to keep on asking, keep on  seeking, keep on knocking!  And in the same text, He tells a story about how important persistence is in prayer!  God wants to hear from us through our prayers ANYTIME!

Jesus spent all night in prayer to His Father (see Luke 6:12)!

Jesus begged three of His apostles – Peter, James and John – to “watch and pray” (Matthew 26:41)!  He speaks about how we can  accomplish great things if we trust in God’s power when we pray (Matthew 21:21-22)!

God’s word tells us to pray without ceasing - continually (II Thess. 5:17)!

God wants to hear from YOU anytime!  So, let us be ready to pray to God at all times!  His ears are not tuned in to our prayers just from “9 to 5”!  He is listening for our prayers “24/7”!

Remember: When your knees knock, kneel and pray!

Getting on your knees will help keep you on your toes!

A lot of kneeling keeps you in good standing with God!

God is listening for you … even right now!!

Remember JESUS!

(dmw)

Every first day of the week, we Christians engage in a special Memorial.  Our Lord Jesus commands us to remember Him by eating the bread (unleavened) and drinking the cup (fruit of the vine) - I Corinthians 11:23-26, Acts 20:7.

The suffering and death that Jesus experienced was not because of HIS mistakes, transgressions, and sins!  He suffered and died for OUR mistakes, transgressions, and sins – Isaiah 53:4-6!  Jesus suffered as a substitute for us!

Today, while remembering Jesus as you eat the bread and drink the cup, meditate on the crucifixion scene as described in the Bible, realizing that …

The spit spewed on the face of Jesus by angry Jewish Council members, and later by the Roman soldiers in the Praetorium – Pilate’s official residence - should have been on OUR faces!

The slaps, punches, and slugs from the soldiers on the Christ’s face and body should have been on OUR faces and bodies!

The scourging whip used on the back of our Lord to beat it to a bloody pulp should have landed on OUR backs!

The cross that Christ carried to His crucifixion place should have been carried on OUR shoulders!

The nails hammered into Christ’s hands and feet should have been hammered into OUR hands and feet!

The crown of thorns that cut, and probably caused blood to trickle down the face of Jesus should have been placed on OUR heads!

The best substitute we ever had is JESUS of Nazareth, God’s Christ, voluntarily enduring sufferings that WE deserved!  Thank God for Jesus!  Remember HIM while eating HIS Supper!

IMPROVING YOUR SERVE

One of the games my dad and I played when I was a teen was Ping Pong. When I played my dad, he destroyed me every time. So, I practiced until one day we played each other and I initially won! He smiled and said, “Now I’ll play you with my left hand.” That’s when I realized; my dad is left handed. We played again, this time using his left hand, and he left me baffled by the whole event. Not only did he beat me, he played an entirely different style of game that included about nine new serves. I’d like to go on and tell how I traveled overseas to train with master Ping Pong instructors and mastered 11 unbeatable serves with either hand…but that didn’t happen. What happened is that I just kind of gave up. We haven’t played much since that day. My dad had developed several serves with his right hand and more with his left hand. One of the central ways to win at Ping Pong is to effectively serve the ball. And in order to beat my dad at Ping Pong one day I knew I’d have to improve my serve.

Let’s move that in to another context. Let’s consider the art of serving one another. Serving is not a game to be won, but rather a blessing to practice. Two concepts from my story may help us improve our serve: One, as there are many ways to serve a Ping Pong ball, so there are many ways to serve others. It’s easy to look at others with different talents and think, “Sure, I’d serve more if I could do what they’re doing!” Remember this is not a competitive event. Serving like or better than them is not the goal. The goal is to humbly serve as you are able, and to do so in the name of Jesus.

Two, as learning to serve a Ping Pong ball takes time and practice, so it will take time and practice to improve your serve. Sometimes, we wait for the big opportunity to do something really huge and great for the Lord and when or if that day comes it’s an incredible day and God is glorified. But more often that not, what is missed are those daily opportunities to encourage someone, invite someone, show hospitality, send $10 to a good mission work, visit someone who is lonely, or just do something you can do on any ordinary day.

This is how Jesus taught us to improve our serve: “Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me” (Matthew 25:34-36). Let’s listen to Jesus and improve our serve.

Sam Pace, Northwest church of Christ, Westminster, CO

Shine Your Shoes

Time spent shining shoes is not wasted time.

I like shoes. I don’t like to buy new shoes; I like old shoes. I like old, shiny shoes. I have been known to have shoes re-soled three times. I became friends with the old German man who owned the shoe-repair shop in south Arkansas. I still get a chuckle when I    remember going to pick up a pair of shoes that he had re-soled for me and as he was handing them to me he said, “Mr. Stegall, I think this is the last time we can re-sole these.” I protested . . . pointing out that the upper leather was still good. He said, “I don’t know that I have ever had a customer who took such good care of his shoes, but they do wear out at some point!”

When I was a teenager, if you had a pair of Bass Weejuns penny loafers you were the cat’s meow! It took me a long time to save up enough money to get a pair, but it was worth it. If you spent the hours necessary to give them a true “spit-shine,” then shining them for the rest of their life was a piece of cake.

If all you ever own is tennis shoes, you’ll never know the satisfaction of wearing a pair of well-shined shoes. You can have on sloppy clothes, but if your shoes are shined, you look pretty good!

It appears to me that today’s equivalent is that you have to have your hair moussed and sticking up at the proper angles. Trust me . . . it’s not the same!

Many people ignore the little things in life. They seem unimportant and unnecessary. And I suppose within themselves, they might be. But the details are what make life worth living. They add the beauty to life. A child that says, “Thank you.” An ADULT that says, “Thank you.” A young person who gets up to give his seat to an old person. A hand-written note encouraging someone who seems distressed or is sad. Picking up a piece of trash that someone else discarded. Holding the door open for the folks behind you. Giving someone a hug . . . the little things.

Remember what it was that caused Jesus to call his disciples together and say, “Look at that!”? Two pennies. A widow’s life’s savings. But who knew? Maybe nobody. Impressive? Not so much to everyone at church. Nobody would have noticed. Unimportant? God didn’t think so.

Take the time to do the “little things” . . . the kindnesses that probably won’t be noticed.

“And God, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

-Ken Stegall, Woodland Oaks Church of Christ (August 13, 2017)

We are excited to have Allen and Robin Dutton with us this morning.  Our congregation has partnered with the Dutton family for many years in spreading the gospel in Brazil.  Allen grew up in Brazil as the son of a missionary.  Robin grew up here at Westside.  Allen and Robin met and were married while students at Oklahoma Christian and have worked in Brazil ever since.

Allen is an Ophthalmologist and works in Brazil as a medical missionary.  Through his work, he is able to provide the special gift of sight to so many who otherwise would not be able to see.  This benevolent work also opens great doors of opportunity to teach the lost.

This work is currently sponsored by the Memorial Road congregation in Oklahoma City.  Westside provides working funds for both the medical clinic, and Allen’s native co-workers in Campinas.

We are all very excited about the progress which has been made in Brazil.  Allen and Robin are great missionaries.  They have been instrumental in establishing several congregations in Campinas, and have helped each new church family press on to maturity.  Many people have heard the name of Jesus through the efforts of the Dutton family.  Westside has been blessed by our association with Allen and Robin.

Allen will be teaching a combined adult Bible class this morning and speaking at the morning assembly.   We look forward to hearing about the ongoing mission work in Brazil.  It is great to have Allen and Robin with us again.

CHANGE

It is often said there are only two “sure things” in life: death and taxes. At least one more, however, should be added to this list, the concept of “change.” There will always be change in our lives and in our church family. New members will come, current ones will move away, babies will be born, and saints will pass away. How classes and ministries are organized and managed will adapt to growth. The facility will change in appearance, layout, and size. New ministries will be created and others ended as the needs of the congregation, community, and world evolve. I have only been here for nine years and I have seen an incredible amount of growth and change. I firmly believe the Lord has been in control and worked through the wisdom of godly leadership to help this congregation grow and be in a closer walk with God.

The pictures in our membership directory are also subject to change. New deacons will be appointed while others step down. The number and personality of our eldership will look different ten years from now just as it looked different ten years ago. The ministry staff pictures are also subject to change and have changed in my time here.

We do not typically like change because it forces us out of our comfort zone and makes us face the unknown. However, if you look back over your own life, think about the changes you have been through which may have been scary at the time, but you endured and now they are just memories in the rear-view mirror. Becoming an adult, getting married, raising children, experiencing loss, illnesses, tough family times, and workplace changes are huge obstacles we all face. There is a huge difference in how the lost and the saved face changes. As saints in Christ we can lean on hope, faith, and one another to endure change.

How the members of this congregation face change in the future will demonstrate whether they trust in God. His plans are bigger than our plans. His decisions are beyond our ability to anticipate or understand, and His will is superior to our own. I personally believe God is ready for the Westside congregation to do big things. I believe He is ready for us to continue growing and maturing. The lost souls of our community will still be there tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year no matter who is in the pictures in our directory.

May we all follow God’s lead, pray for wisdom in our leadership, and continue the Lord’s work here in Norman and the world.

God Wants to be Father

Brad Paisley wrote a beautiful song from the perspective of a son of a  single mother. When the mother began to be courted by a new man, the boy was included from the start. When the man asked her to marry him, the boy overheard and prayed that she would say yes. The boy realizes he has a dad now… but realizes something more than that. As the chorus says: “Lookin’ back all I can say about all the things he did for me is I hope I’m at least half the dad that he didn’t have to be.”

There is a deep appreciation in the boy’s heart, knowing that this man chose to become his dad. Other men may have been scared off by a single mom with a child. This man didn’t have to step in and love the boy as a son, but he did… and he turned out to be just what their family needed.

In the spiritual life, it is important to remember that God made the same choice regarding us. God cares for us (1 Peter 5:7) but did he have to? The picture we get in Romans shows a human race that God had every right to walk away from:

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us… For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” (Romans 5:8, 10)

God would have been justified in dealing with us according to our sins. We were God’s enemies and He could have treated us as rebels. The shocking surprise of the gospel is that God chose instead to become the Father that He didn’t have to be. Through Christ, the wonderful Spirit of adoption became available to any who seek after it (Romans 8:15). We can become children of God!  He didn’t have to become the Father you need, but because He cares for you, He welcomes you home. How wonderful is that?

We Love the Souls of Everyone

“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who  desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth”  (1 Timothy 2:3–4).

Because we love the souls of men and want them to go to heaven, we preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul knew this burden and said, “I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:14–16).

Because we love the souls of men, we are not afraid to speak out against sin. We know that passions of the flesh “wage war against the soul” (1  Peter 2:11).

Because we love the souls of men, we preach the need to follow Jesus.  Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. “No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

Because we love the souls of men, we point people to what is best. The Lord Jesus came to bring us an abundant life (John 10:10). His yoke is easy, and His burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).  He is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). He is “our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30). We can do no better than to preach Jesus and Him crucified to every soul in every place who will hear.

Singing is a common occurrence in our house. Evie sings just about every 10 minutes. Sometimes she sings songs that she hears on the radio and other times she’ll just make up songs about the things going on around her. “We’re driving down the road!!! Just passed a blue car and I waved at them!!! Ooooooo Aaaaaaa!!! Lalalala!!!”   It’s my belief that we sing the most when we are happy. We sing because we know we are blessed and free. We sing because we have a Father who loves us and cares for us. We sing to our new baby Forest because we want to comfort him. We sing with our children because we want to have fun and make memories with them.

So, when I open God’s word and read that He “will rejoice over me with singing”,  I’m at a loss for words—to know that my God, my Father, the Creator of all things seen and unseen, REJOICES AND SINGS ABOUT ME!!!! Let that sink in for a minute. . . . I don’t know about you, but that makes me feel good! That makes me want to sing a song!

What’s in a Name?

Lois Tverberg

It’s hard to overstate how important names were in Biblical times. In ancient thought, without a name, an object or being didn’t even exist.  Egyptian documents describe the time before creation as “when no name of anything had yet been named.” After God called each piece of the universe into existence, He completed its creation by naming it: day, night, heaven, earth, sea. By doing so, He was also exerting His sovereignty, because the one who names another has authority. When God gave Adam the task of naming all the animals, He was giving him his first exercise in ruling over creation (Genesis 2:19).

In the ancient Near East, a person’s name was intimately linked to his or her identity and reputation.  When God reoriented a person’s life, He also changed their name. “Abram” became “Abraham” and “Jacob” became “Israel” to show the new direction God had given them.

Because names were so significant, a common pagan practice was to try to manipulate the spiritual world by using divine names in incantations. The gods of polytheism were understood to be finite and subject to magical forces more powerful than them. If you knew their names, you could petition them to do your bidding.

But throughout the Bible, God refused to respond when divine names were used “Harry-Potter style”, as magical incantations. In Acts 19, the  even sons of Sceva learned this the hard way. The exorcists attempted to cast out a demon “in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches.” But then the demon laughed at them, retorting, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then it assaulted them, beating them until they ran away naked and bleeding (Acts 19:13-16). Undoubtedly, these men were calling on the correct Jesus, even pronouncing His name with a perfect Hebrew  inflection.  But because they weren’t Jesus’ disciples, they had no authority to issue commands in His name.
